An aftermarket replacement VNT nozzle ring — the variable-vane assembly inside the turbine housing — for the BorgWarner BV39 turbocharger on the 1.9 TDI diesel, as fitted to the Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia. The vanes change angle to control boost. On a high-mileage 1.9 TDI they commonly seize with soot, which shows up as the engine dropping into limp mode, boost that comes in late or cuts out, or an intermittent loss of power that clears when the engine is restarted.

This is a turbo repair part rather than a complete turbocharger, and it is normally fitted by a turbo rebuilder while the turbo is off the vehicle and stripped.

Making sure it is the right one

Find the label on the turbocharger’s compressor housing. It carries a BorgWarner (KKK) number, usually beginning 5439.
Check it matches one of the numbers above — the first nine digits 543998800 or 543997000 followed by 17 to 22.
Check the engine code in your vehicle’s service book or on the engine itself, and compare it with the table.
