This is a turbo cartridge (CHRA), not a complete turbocharger

A cartridge — also called a CHRA or turbo core — is the centre section of a turbocharger: the shaft, the turbine and compressor wheels, the bearings and the centre housing. It is the part that wears out.

Included

  • Centre housing
  • Shaft and turbine wheel
  • Compressor wheel
  • Bearings and seals

Not included

  • Turbine (exhaust) housing
  • Compressor (inlet) housing
  • Actuator or VNT control

Buy a cartridge when your existing housings and actuator are still in good condition and only the centre has failed. Fitting one means transferring your own housings across and having the assembly balanced and set up correctly — this is workshop work, not a bolt-on replacement.

If you would rather fit a complete, ready-to-go unit, see our complete turbochargers.

Make sure it is the right one. Do not order a cartridge from your engine size alone — the same engine was often fitted with more than one turbocharger. Find the number stamped on the plate on your existing turbo and check it against the part numbers listed on this page. If you are not certain, send us the number and we will confirm it before you pay.

An aftermarket replacement turbo cartridge (the centre assembly, also called a CHRA) for the BorgWarner K03 turbocharger on Opel’s 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, as fitted to the Astra, Corsa, Insignia and Meriva. It is the part to replace when the turbo has worn but its housings are undamaged. Typical signs of a worn cartridge on this engine are a loss of power, boost that is slow to build, blue smoke, oil in the intercooler pipes, or a whistle or grinding sound from the turbo.

What this fits

Make Model Engine Years
Opel Astra H 1.6 Turbo 132 kW, Z16LET 2007 – 2010
Opel Astra J 1.6 Turbo 132 kW, A16LET 2009 – 2015
Opel Corsa D (1.6 Turbo) Z16LEL / A16LEL, Z16LER / A16LER 2007 – 2014
Opel Insignia A 1.6 Turbo 132 kW, A16LET 2008 – 2017
Opel Meriva A (1.6 Turbo) 1.6 Turbo 132 kW, Z16LET 2005 – 2010

Turbo petrol only. This does not fit the non-turbo 1.6 petrol engines, or the diesel versions of these models. Years are a guide; the engine code and the number on your turbo’s label are exact. The same vehicles were also sold as Vauxhall in the UK.

Cross-reference numbers

This cartridge suits turbochargers carrying any of the following numbers:

53039700110 · 53039880110 · 53037100534 · 55355617 · 5860016

Making sure it is the right one

  1. Find the label on the turbocharger. It carries a BorgWarner (KKK) number and often an Opel number.
  2. Check the BorgWarner number reads 5303-970-0110 or 5303-988-0110, or that the Opel number reads 55355617 or 5860016.
  3. Check your engine code — it appears on the engine and in the service book — against the table above.

If the label on your turbo is missing or unreadable, contact us before ordering.
