This is a turbo cartridge (CHRA), not a complete turbocharger

A cartridge — also called a CHRA or turbo core — is the centre section of a turbocharger: the shaft, the turbine and compressor wheels, the bearings and the centre housing. It is the part that wears out.

Included

  • Centre housing
  • Shaft and turbine wheel
  • Compressor wheel
  • Bearings and seals

Not included

  • Turbine (exhaust) housing
  • Compressor (inlet) housing
  • Actuator or VNT control

Buy a cartridge when your existing housings and actuator are still in good condition and only the centre has failed. Fitting one means transferring your own housings across and having the assembly balanced and set up correctly — this is workshop work, not a bolt-on replacement.

If you would rather fit a complete, ready-to-go unit, see our complete turbochargers.

Make sure it is the right one. Do not order a cartridge from your engine size alone — the same engine was often fitted with more than one turbocharger. Find the number stamped on the plate on your existing turbo and check it against the part numbers listed on this page. If you are not certain, send us the number and we will confirm it before you pay.

An aftermarket replacement turbo cartridge (the centre assembly, also called a CHRA) for the Garrett GTB2256VK turbocharger on the 3.2-litre five-cylinder TDCi diesel in the Ford Ranger PX and the Mazda BT-50, 2011 to 2015. It is the part to replace when the turbo itself has worn but its housings are undamaged. Typical signs of a worn cartridge on this engine are a loss of pulling power, slow or uneven boost, blue or grey smoke, oil in the intercooler pipes, or a whistle or siren note that rises with engine speed.

What this fits

Make Model Engine Years
Ford Ranger PX 3.2 TDCi, 147 kW (SA2R, SA2S, SA2W, SAFA) 2011 – 2015
Mazda BT-50 3.2, 147 kW (P5AT) 2011 – 2015

Not for the facelifted Ranger from 2015 (PX2 onwards). At the facelift Ford moved the 3.2 to a different turbocharger, carrying Ford numbers that begin FB3Q-6K682, and this cartridge does not replace it. If your vehicle was built around the changeover, go by the number on the turbo rather than the year.

Cross-reference numbers

This cartridge suits turbochargers carrying any of the following numbers:

812971-0002 · 798166-0007 · 853333-5001

Making sure it is the right one

  1. Find the label or stamped plate on the turbocharger. It carries a Garrett number and often a Ford number.
  2. Check the Garrett number starts 812971, 798166 or 853333, or that the Ford number starts BK3Q-6K682.
  3. If the Ford number starts FB3Q-6K682, this is the later turbo and this cartridge is not the right part.
  4. If your engine is the 2.2 rather than the 3.2, you need the Ford Ranger 2.2 cartridge instead.

If the label on your turbo is missing or unreadable, contact us before ordering.
